About Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi

Shri Mataji was born to a Christian family in Chindwara, central India, at noon on 21 March 1923. Her father was a noted language scholar and a member of the Legislative Assembly after India won Independence.  Through his deep belief in the oneness of man regardless of race or religion, he supported his daughter in her spiritual aim to give Self-Realisation en-masse.

As a child, her greatness was recognised by Mahatma Gandhi, who invited her to work in his ashram.  She studied medicine and psychology, married and raised a family. Her husband served 16 years as Secretary General to the UN’s International Maritime Organisation.  He received decorations from the Kings of Sweden, Norway and Spain as well as a knighthood (KCMG) from the Queen of England.

Start of Sahaja Yoga

In 1970, after seeing the ways in which the commercial ‘gurus’ were misleading and cheating true seekers on the path of Spirituality, Shri Mataju decided to commence her true work of teaching the simple method she had discovered for achieving real inner peace through Sahaja Yoga meditation.

Shri Mataji’s work received much official recognition, including: 1995 – she was invited by UNICEF to address the World Women’s Conference in Beijing, China, as a main speaker; 1994 –  Petrovskaya Science & Arts Academy of St Petersburg conferred Honorary Membership for her peace work; 1994 – given Keys of the City, Brasilia, for spreading global peace; 1989 – Soviet Union signed an historic protocol incorporating Sahaja Yoga into their medical system.

Shri Mataji’s aim was to meet the seekers of Truth wherever they are.  She acted as a catalyst and offered Self-Realisation to those who desire it. Through her tireless efforts, Sahaja Yoga is now established in over 100 countries, where it is offered free of charge.

“I bow to all the seekers of truth. At the very outset we have to know that truth is what it is. We cannot think about it, we cannot conceptualize it. Unfortunately at this human level we cannot feel it, we cannot know it. We have to be the spirit to know the truth.”
Shri Mataji Public Leature, Paris 1992

About Sahaja Yoga.

Human beings cannot achieve harmony with the Earth, Nature or each other unless we first establish peace within ourselves and achieve our Self-Realisation. This is the process of awakening and integrating with the Kundalini, the Universal spiritual energy.  With Sahaja Yoga, this experience is immediately available regardless of whether or not one has attempted to meditate in the past. All that is required is a sincere desire to establish a connection with one’s inner Self.  It is simple and gentle, with no cost involved.

Sahaja Yoga meditation gives a connection of the inner subtle body system with the greater all-pervading power. It is a true yoga, based on both ancient and modern wisdom and experience.

Practising Sahaja Yoga can take us away from stressful situations to a peaceful and satisfied life.  We can achieve our life’s goal with greater confidence and dynamism while achieving a balance, encouraging physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.
